PREPARE

It can be difficult for us to keep our relationship with money in its proper place. We often are unaware of the ways we have allowed wealth to cloud our perspectives, our loyalties, our true level of need and where our hope lies. Jesus challenges us to make a choice – and to recognize again that this choice relates to which kingdom we are pouring our time and attention to, either this world or our true home in heaven.

Prepare for this week’s message by reading Matthew 6:19-24 with 1 Timothy 6:17-19

ATTEND

Verses: Matthew 6:19-24

Main Point: Kingdom Citizens will be faithful to God as the first priory above all other things.

1. What the Heart Treasures: (Matthew 6:19-21)

2. The Sole Soul Focus: (Matthew 6:22-23)

3. There can be Only One: (Matthew 6:24)

REFLECT

1. What impacted you most from this week’s message? What challenged you or encouraged you? What did you learn about the character of God? How did this week’s sermon affect your perspective on God or your perspective on yourself?
2. Describe your relationship with money and possessions? Are they things you use or things you worship? How can a person know the difference? What is your heart most regularly focused on?
3. Read Matthew 6:19-21. What contrast did Jesus make between treasures in this world and treasures in heaven? What does it look like to store up treasures in heaven versus storing up treasures on earth?
4. What did Jesus mean when he said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”? What does what we treasure reveal about our hearts?
5. Read Matthew 6:22-23. What do light and darkness symbolize in the Bible? How do the things we place our focus on affect our souls? What is the impact of taking darkness into our souls? How can the focus of our hearts create confusion or clarity?
6. Read Proverbs 4:23. What does it mean to guard your heart? If everything we do comes from our hearts (our identities) how should we live in order to guard our hearts?
7. Read Matthew 6:24. In what ways is serving God and serving money similar? Why is it impossible to serve both God and money? What happens to people who try to serve both?
8. Why do people want money and possessions? What does money promise that makes it so appealing? Can money really provide what it promises?
