Purpose of this Book

John tells us exactly why he wrote this book:

“But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.”

—John 20:31

What to Look for:

The “I Am” Statements: Throughout this book, Jesus says “I Am” many times. This is intentional! It connects back to Exodus 3:14, when God told Moses His name: “I Am Who I Am.” John wants his readers—especially Jews—to recognize that Jesus is identifying Himself as God.

Jesus’ Words More Than His Actions: Unlike other Gospels that focus on what Jesus did, John spends more time on what Jesus said. He records longer conversations and deep teachings from Jesus.

The Final Week of Jesus’ Ministry: A huge portion of John (chapters 11–18, about 40% of the book) is dedicated to Jesus’ last days before His crucifixion. This gives us an intimate look at His final moments and words.

As you read, take time to reflect on who Jesus says He is and what that means for your faith today.
