Made for More Part Three

Pastor Mike Harper

What kind of worship does God like?
Old Testament translators took seven completely different Hebrew words and simplified them into one English word “praise.”

7 Hebrew Word for Praise

Halal in Hebrew is הַלֵּל
Definition: to rave, to boast, to celebrate, to be clamorously foolish.
“I am going to thank you in front of the great assembly; I’m going to praise (halal) you before all the people.” Psalms 35:18

Yada in Hebrew is יָדַע
Definition: to acknowledge in public with a hand extended hand.
God gets to decide how he wants to
be worshipped.
“I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will (yada) lift up my hands.” Psalms 63:4

Barak in Hebrew is  בָּרָק
Definition: to bless by kneeling or by bowing.
“Praise (barak) the Lord O my soul; and all my innermost being, praise (barak) his holy name.” Psalms 103:1

Zamar in Hebrew is זָמַר
Definition: to strike the strings with force
“It is good to praise (zamar) the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High.” Psalms 92:1

Shabach in Hebrew is שָׁבַח
Definition: to address in a loud tone, to shout
“Your love is better than life, my lips
will praise (shabach) you.” Psalms 63:3

Toda in Hebrew is תודה
Definition: to lift hands in adoration and surrender
Whoso offers praise (toda) glorifies me: and to him that orders his conversation aright will I show the salvation of God.” Psalms 50:23

Tehillah in Hebrew is תְּהִלָּה
Definition: song that is spontaneously sung to God in moments of gratitude
“My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise (zamar) I will praise (yada) thee O Lord among the people I will sing praises (shabach) to thee among the nations.” Psalms 57:7-11

Worship is love expressed.

When you love someone, you should love them according to the way they receive love.

Jesus answered: “The most important one is this, Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:29-31

We worship God by expressing our affection to God.

God actually really likes it when you think
about him.
