Sermon: A Question of Identity
Scripture: John 21:15-17
Summary: There may be no greater threat to identity than failure—especially public failure. And perhaps no failure has been more public in the last 2,000 years than Peter’s denial of Jesus. In this section of John’s Gospel, we are given the profound privilege of witnessing Jesus lift Peter from the rubble of his failure.

For Reflection and Discussion

Read Scripture: John 21:15-17

  1. What is your biggest failure? How public was it?
  2. If you had to nail down what background influences have made you what you are today, then what would you say?
  3. Which flashbacks to Peter’s past did you find the most impacting? Why?
  4. How much restoration do you really want?
  5. Read John 18:15-18,25-27. In his denials of Jesus, what was Peter’s identity tethered to? Have you ever struggled with a similar problem? If so, share it with the group.
  6. Is Jesus and your love for him the centre of who you understand yourself to be?
  7. Read 1 John 4:19-20. Where can you see yourself becoming a more loving person?
