The Role of Money
Part of Spirituality and Money
August 16, 2024
Do we worship money, or do we use it to worship God?
I Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Money can only do what we tell it to do.
Matthew 6:19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“ To have one’s treasure in heaven means to submit oneself totally to that which is in heaven—God’s sovereign rule. —Robert Guelich”
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Generosity is not measured by how much you give.
1. First, God is the source.
2. Second, we are the stewards
3. Third, there is a big difference between saving and hoarding or greed.
4. Fourth, there is also a big difference between being generous and reckless.
5. Fifth, surrender it to God.
