- Name a few reasons that the Pharisees and Scribes were antagonistic toward Jesus.
- Why didn’t Jesus adopt the traditional Jewish handwashing?
- Jesus said that the Pharisees cleaned the outside but the inside was dirty and dark (v.39). In what ways do you sometimes focus on the outside and forget the inside?
- Jesus remarks about how the Pharisees give a tenth of all their property, but neglect the love of God (v.42).
- There’s always a discussion about whether or not Christians are supposed to tithe (give a 10th of their income). Does verse 42 inform your opinion one way or another?
- Jesus said that the Pharisees are like unmarked graves (v.44). What did He mean by this?
- In verse 45 the scribes speak up. What is the difference between Pharisees and Scribes?
- Scribes were the intellectuals of the day. How do you think what Jesus said in verse 52 made them feel?
- Considering the difference between the Pharisees and Scribes, which of the two would you say you most relate with? Are your spiritual failures more like one or the other?
