Lessons about God from David
Introduction: Priming the pump for tonight’s discussion.
This week we studied four Psalms together. As we begin, was there anything particular that God spoke directly to you during the study? Can you share it with the group?
Exploration: Questions to guide our group discussion.
- We learned this week that Jesus is both the creator and sustainer of the universe. Before He was born into human flesh to save us, He existed without a beginning, eternal, God. Let’s read a few scriptures about this and wrap our minds around the eternal nature of Christ, our creator.
- John 1:1-4, 10, 14
- Colossians 1:15-18
- Philippians 2:5-11
- Hebrews 1:1-4
2.David’s prayer in Psalm 25 can be viewed as a model prayer. Jesus also gave us a model for prayer in Matthew 6:5-15. Taking these two passages together, what principles of prayer can we learn about how we should pray?
3.In Psalm 26, David took stock of his life. He knew that it was important to prepare for eternity. Hebrews 9:27 reads, And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment. Is there anyone in our group who would be willing to share a brief testimony about how they came to know Christ?
4.In Psalm 27 we learned that a believer has no real reason to fear men…even enemies who might be totally against us. When we walk with God, God walks with us. Greater faith really is the key to overcoming fear and anxiety. How does being overcome by fear show us that we need more faith? What can a Christian do to get more faith from God?
Additional Scriptures for Deeper Study:
- Matthew 6:5-8
- 1 John 5:12
- Isaiah 41:10
Application: How can I apply this to my life this week?
Sometimes, we don’t really know how to think about Jesus and don’t think about Him much before His incarnation. Based on what we’ve read tonight, how might God have you to expand your thinking to comprehend the eternal nature of Jesus our Messiah?
Proverbs 29:25 reads, the fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in God will be safe. As we think about walking with God, would He challenge you to overcome the fear of man by trusting more fully in His promises to you? Is there a specific fear or anxiety to lay down tonight?
