Part 6 – Practicing Honor
Intro:
MAIN IDEA:
Practicing honor has more to do with your love for Christ than it does your view of the other persons leadership.
The bible says a lot about this topic:
*Romans 12:10 - Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. ESV
*
Exodus 20:12 - “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. ESV
Hebrews 13:18 - Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. ESV
1 Peter 2:17 - Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. ESV
1 Sam 24:1 -BACK STORY (Saul had been trying to kill David because he was jealous. While chasing him down) 3 At the place where the road passes some sheepfolds, Saul went into a cave to relieve himself. But as it happened, David and his men were hiding farther back in that very cave! 4 “Now’s your opportunity!” David’s men whispered to him. “Today the Lord is telling you, ‘I will certainly put your enemy into your power, to do with as you wish.’” So David crept forward and cut off a piece of the hem of Saul’s robe. 5 But then David’s conscience began bothering him because he had cut Saul’s robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.” 7 So David restrained his men and did not let them kill Saul. After Saul had left the cave and gone on his way, 8 David came out and shouted after him, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked around, David bowed low before him. 9 Then he shouted to Saul, “Why do you listen to the people who say I am trying to harm you? 10 This very day you can see with your own eyes it isn’t true. NLT
God truth to remember about honoring those in authority above us:
God cares about how we treat those in authority over us.
Even if they are not doing their part, God wants us to honor Him with OUR part.
Biblical honor is NOT:
Allowing yourself to live in an abusive situation without protecting yourself.
Biblical honor IS:
Showing respect to the position in HOW you communicate and handle yourself.
How can I biblically practice honor Jesus’ way:
1. Guard your heart and head from pride and rotten attitudes
2 Cor. 10:5b - we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. NIV
2. Be slow to judge
Matthew 7:3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? NIV
3. Change your perspective…what is God trying to teach you in this season.
4. Give yourself permission to put boundaries in place, but do it in a God honoring way.
WHY IS HONOR IMPORTANT
Rom 13:1 - (Written in a time of foreign rule) For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.
1 Peter 3:15b - And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way.

12 “May the Lord judge between us. Perhaps the Lord will punish you for what you are trying to do to me, but I will never harm you. 13 As that old proverb says, ‘From evil people come evil deeds.’ So you can be sure I will never harm you. NLT
