Have you ever performed in a play? Or acted like someone else? Been in costume? What was the experience like?

Engage and Apply

  1. Read the following verses and use them to come up with a definition of hypocrisy.
    Isaiah 29:13
    Matthew 6:5
    Matthew 23:27
    1 John 4:20

  2. The word hypocrite is rooted in the Greek word for actor meaning “someone who wears a mask.”
What are some examples of Christians being hypocrites?
Have you ever had doubts about God because of the actions of people who claim to follow Him?
If someone tells you they want to believe in God but can’t because Christians are hypocrites, what would you say to them?

  3. Brace yourself for the hard question: Is there an area of your life where you are acting like you have it all together but you don’t? Is there an area of your relationship with God where you are acting like you have it all together but you don’t?

  4. Wolfgang challenged us to do two things to help ourselves overcome hypocrisy:
    Stop pretending
Start being part of a better story

Read these verses that Wolfgang shared in the sermon:
Matthew 7:3-5 and 1 John 1:8-9. What can we do to stop pretending to be something we are not?

Matthew 5:14-16. We have an amazing opportunity right now to be a light for Jesus. We can start being part of a better story today. Discuss ways that you can do that as individuals and as a group. Maybe you know of a need that you can meet or a person that could use encouragement. Visit togetherfor.com for more ideas.

Prayer
As a group, pray for the global church—that we may shine the light of Jesus in an authentic way that will draw people to God, not drive them away. Pray that God will use us during this epic time in world history to reveal Himself, His love, and His compassion for all.

On your own, spend time with God in confession, asking Him to reveal and forgive any areas of hypocrisy in your life. Seek His guidance on how you can live honestly before Him and the people in your world. Share what you learn with a trusted person in your life.
