SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE
CONVERSATION STARTER
Paul’s letter to the Romans is considered by many to be the most theologically dense book in the entire Bible. If you could ask Paul one question, what would it be?
DEEPER
Romans 1
Pastor Josh showed us that the power of salvation changes hearts. On the contrary, those who do not believe the gospel suppress the truth of God’s existence and chase the desire of their heart. What ways have you seen God change your heart since you’ve believed the Good News? Compare this to the life you once lived before receiving salvation through faith.
Romans 2
Paul explains to us that being a hypocritical judge is wrong, and by judging others hypocritically, we condemn ourselves. Why is this significant in the context of salvation power as well as the false teaching of works-based salvation? How do you find yourself judging others in a way that would condemn yourself?
Romans 3
Even while we are unfaithful, God uses our unfaithfulness to accomplish his perfect will. How do we see this theme reveal itself throughout the Old and New Testaments? What about in your own life?
Romans 4
Paul makes a case against works-based salvation by showing that Abraham was justified not by his works, but by grace through faith. In what ways are we tempted to think or act in a way that manifests a false belief that we are justified by our works?
Romans 5
How does this way of thinking (works-based salvation) rob us of peace? How is peace found in Sola Fide (“faith alone”) where it is not through a works-based salvation?
Romans 6
What does it mean that, through the power of the gospel, we are no longer slaves to sin, especially if we continue to sin every day? How are we freed from sin?
Romans 7
Paul speaks of the spiritual warfare taking place within him. What does this spiritual warfare look like within you? What is the Spirit of God telling you right now? What is your flesh and Satan telling you?
Romans 8
Read Romans 8:28. How have you seen this promise play out in your life or the lives of others? What does this verse mean to you personally when facing difficult situations?
Romans 1-8
What stood out to you in this week’s sermon? What were your biggest takeaways?
