Staying in Step with the Holy Spirit

Hurry and Love are incompatible.

Symptoms of Hurry Sickness – from The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

  1. Irritability – You get mad, frustrated, or annoyed way too easily
  2. Hypersensitivity – All it takes is a minor comment to hurt your feelings, a disgruntled email to set you off, or a small change of plans to ruin your day.
  3. Restlessness – When you actually try to slow down and rest, you can’t relax.
  4. Workaholism (or nonstop activity) – You just don’t know when to stop.
  5. Emotional Numbness – You don’t have the capacity to feel another’s pain.
  6. Out-of-order priorities – You’re always getting sucked into the urgent instead of the important.
  7. Lack of Care for your Body – You don’t have time for 8 hours of sleep a night; daily exercise; healthy food; or margin
  8. Escapist Behavior – You turn to distractions often: overeating, overdrinking, binge-watching Netflix, scrolling social media, looking at porn, etc.
  9. Slippage of Spiritual Disciplines – When you get too busy, you let the things that are actually life giving go (quiet time, Sabbath, worship, etc)
  10. Isolation – You feel disconnected from God, others, and your own soul.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” —Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT)

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. —Matthew 11:28-30 (The Message)

Fighting looks like:
Come to Him

Walk with Him and Work with Him

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you —John 14:16-17 (NLT)
