This series is meant to help us fix our eyes upon God Himself as the main of the Bible & understand how each book points us to His grand purposes of restoration.

• So, as we come to the book of Isaiah, let’s first remind ourselves of the covenant history that Isaiah, as a prophet of God, sought to remind Israel about.
• God wants us to understand what He is doing.

// Genesis

// Genesis
// Exodus
// 2 Samuel

• This is vitally important as we come to the book of Isaiah. Why?

Isaiah’s Book

• The book of Isaiah has been called the Miniature

.

// The Bible has 66 books >> Isaiah has 66 chapters
// The Old Testament has 39 books >> Isaiah being with 39 chapters of

// The New Testament has 27 books >> Isaiah ends with 27 chapters of

• Judgment & hope inextricably go hand-in-hand in the book of Isaiah.
• But in the midst of his warnings of judgment, the book of Isaiah speaks of an enduring work God is doing because of His covenant

.

The Story of Isaiah’s Prophecies

• Chapters 1-2 >> God is going to

Jerusalem. They are rebellious, idolatrous & unjust, but God is going to bring His purifying fire to bring about a New Jerusalem that is a place of justice & peace for al nations.
• It’s with this in mind that we understand what happens in Isaiah in Chapter 6. What God is going to do to Jerusalem, He does to Isaiah. Isaiah sees the Lord high & lifted up in His holiness.

// Remember in Leviticus when someone unclean touched something in the temple that was considered clean and consecrated? The clean thing became unclean. But for the first time, holiness is

to a person and makes them holy, takes away their guilt, and atones for their sin.
// Instead of dying though like Isaiah knows he should, the Lord touches Isaiah’s lips with something that should have brought destruction (a burning coal). But instead of total destruction, it brought .
// But look at what comes next…he surrenders to be used for the glory of the God he has just been captivated by. Isaiah is commissioned to foretell the purification of Jerusalem & Judah, where it will look like destruction should come through Assyria & Babylon, but even when they chop the tree of Israel down, a holy seed would remain.
// Who is this holy seed? Chapter 7 tells of a leader & king that would come whose name is , “God with us.” He will be empowered by God’s Spirit to bring this New Jerusalem, God’s Kingdom of peace & justice to earth.

• Sin has not just corrupted Israel, but it has corrupted all

. Therefore, in chapters 13-27, Isaiah pronounces judgement on these other nations & their wickedness. But remember judgment & hope go hand in hand, so in these chapters he also tells that that their hope will come as God’s kingdom is established.
• In chapters 28-39, Isaiah sees the leaders of Jerusalem making outside alliances, so he reminds them of the story of Hezekiah.
• Chapters 40-67 peer into the & talks about God’s covenant faithfulness as a way of bringing hope.
• Chapters 56-66 tell about that new that is populated by people who have repented & trusted in the work of this suffering servant on their behalf. These people are commissioned by the suffering servant to go out as servants that proclaim repentance & forgiveness of sins to all nations, declaring that God’s kingdom has come & that we can now be in a relationship with God through Emmanuel, for God has drawn near to us.

Now you see why Isaiah is called the miniature Bible. It has encapsulated the entire story of God. God has not left us simply to be judged. We can be , made holy, have our guilt dealt with, our sin atoned for, and become messengers of the Good News of Emmanuel, God with us, who is the suffering servant who has purchased liberty for the captives.
