John - Day 2: The Lamb of God
John referred to Jesus as the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!” (John 1:29). When Jesus is referred to as the Lamb, it is referring to Him as the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for sin. Within the Old Testament period, God had established a sacrificial system that set the stage for the arrival and death of Jesus Christ. The Jews held daily sacrifices to atone for the sins of the people (Exodus 29:38-42). They held a yearly Passover feast where the Passover lamb was slain and the blood of the lamb was applied to the doorposts of Jewish homes (Exodus 12:11-13). These customs represented the one and only perfect sacrifice that would completely and, once for all, atone for the sins of the world.
