Day 15: The New covenant is the climax of all God’s covenants

In looking at the ancestors of Jesus we find Matthew traces the genealogy from Jesus to Abraham. In Matthew’s genealogy we find Abraham and David. The house and the line of David is the royal kingly line in Israel; this proves the legitimate and legal right Jesus had to the throne in Israel to be the King. Luke chooses to trace the genealogy from Jesus to Adam. There is good reason to believe that Matthew and Luke are in fact tracing entirely different genealogies.

Read Genesis 12:3, 22:18 & Matthew 1:1-17

Q: Who was the promise given to in Genesis? Where does his name appear in the genealogy recorded in Matthew? Why was it important that Jesus descended from Abraham?

Q: Look over the list of names: What familiar names stand out to you?

Q: King David is listed in verse 6. Why was it important that Jesus descended from David? Hint, you can find the answer in 2 Samuel 7:12-16.

Read Jeremiah 23:5 & Luke 3:23-38

Q: Compare and contrast the genealogy of Luke 3 with Matthew 1.

Q: Many scholars believe that Luke was tracing the lineage through Mary’s genealogy. Why would this be a significant observation for the birth of Jesus?

Q: Does Jesus’ genealogies give you any indication as to how long God has planned for Jesus to be the blessing to the nations?
