Something Better - Heb 8:6

November 7, 2021

The Old Covenant was conditional, but the New Covenant is unconditional. It is based not on your behavior but on God’s promises to us.
Gen 17… “I will confirm My

with you and your descendants…”
Gal 3… “those with faith are Abraham’s sons… according to promise…”

Is reading the bible boring? Do you feel like there’s something missing? Do you read about miracles, but don’t experience them? Ever wonder why? You can expect miracles in the New Covenant.
Acts 14:3… “preached grace… proved message was

by miraculous signs…”
Rom 15:19… “in mighty and wonders… I have fully preached the Gospel…”
Heb 2:4… “God confirmed message (grace)… by giving signs, wonders, miracles…”

Miracles follow the preaching of grace, not law. There are no curses under the New Covenant. You can miss out on blessings if you don’t know the terms of the will and believe them.
Rom 1:16-17 GSV… “not ashamed of joyful news of God’s kindness and Jesus’ blessings… THE power for performing miracles of deliverance, safety, health, rescue… to everyone who thinks it to be true, trusts Jesus is able to do it… in it, God’s righteousness is revealed…”
Gal 3:5… “does God work miracles because you obey law… of course not… it is because you

the message you heard about Christ…”

The something we’re missing is rightly dividing covenants. When you understand this, the bible will become alive.
2Tim 2:15… “present yourself approved… not ashamed… rightly dividing Word…”
Heb 8:6… “Jesus obtained superior ministry…

covenant, better promises…”
kreitton… more useful, more serviceable, more advantageous; more excellent…

We are not going to answer all questions today. We are taking it slow, starting by defining some words.
Gen 9… “I am establishing my

with you (Noah) and your descendants…”
Mark 14:24… “this is the blood of the new covenant… poured out for many…”
beriyth/diatheke… alliance of friendship; binding obligation / what one wishes; last will…

Blood covenants are extremely powerful. Contracts exchange property and possessions, while a covenant is the exchange of a person: a non-negotiable oath.
Heb 6:13-20… “I will

you… God wanted to show His purpose more clearly to His heirs… so He guaranteed it with an oath… it is impossible for God to lie…”

At the end of his life, Jesus declared that all terms, conditions, requirements of OC are complete… nothing more to be done… freed us from unfavorable agreement.
John 19:30… “it is

…”
teleo… bring to close; finish, accomplish, fulfill; perform last act to complete a promise…
Heb 9… “mediator of NC… receive promise… because a death has taken place…”

The first covenant with Adam gave us control of earth. God won’t break that.
Gen 1-2… “God

them… be fruitful, multiply, rule earth… eat from any tree… just not from tree of knowledge of good and evil… eat from it, surely die…”
Psa 115:16… “the heavens are the Lord’s… the earth He has given to man…”

How does Adam receive blessings and best manage his house? Eat of any tree but that one. Eat of that tree and die. Notice how unequal that is? God gives us everything. Our part: don’t eat of one tree. One law.
Rom 3:20… “the knowledge of sin comes thru the

…”
Rom 5:20… “the law came in to increase sin…”
1Cor 15:56… “the power of sin is the law…”

There is no temptation without law. You can lie, cheat, steal, murder… be mean, angry, jealous… it wouldn’t affect blessings from God. That’s not how they were dispensed.
Gal 3:19-26… “law given to show sins… until we could be made right thru faith…”
1Tim 1:8-11… “law is good when used correctly… not meant for the

…”

It isn’t knowing the difference between good and evil that’s important. God doesn’t want you focused on sin; He wants you focused on Him. Focus on sin, and your conscience will make you afraid of God.
1Kings 17:18… “O, man of God… have you come here to

out my sins…”
Heb 10:1-23… “law can never make those who approach perfect… or worshippers, once purified, would have no more consciousness of sins… we have been sanctified by the body of Jesus once for all… after offering one sacrifice for sins forever… He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified… this is the covenant I will make with them… their sins and lawless deeds I will remember … let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith… having our hearts cleansed from an evil conscience (focus on sin)… for He who promised is faithful…”

Many think an evil conscience is one that can’t feel sin anymore. Actually, it’s just the opposite. An evil conscience is one that is constantly focused on sin.
1Tim 4:1-3… “some will depart from the faith… following deceptive spirits and doctrines of demons… having conscience

with a hot iron… forbidding and abstaining…”
kausteriazo… soul branded with marks of sin; carry about perpetual consciousness of sin…

The Holy Spirit says rules that forbid and abstain are actually doctrines of demons. It creates an evil conscience that causes people to depart from faith. It has no value in getting rid of sin. When you understand that you’re righteous, it frees you from sinful actions.
John 16:8-11… “HS convicts (believer) about righteousness…”
1Cor 15:34… “awake to

and sin (v) not…”
2Cor 5:21… “He became sin… we become righteousness of God in Christ…”
dikaiosyne… integrity, virtue, purity, correct thinking, acting, feeling…
Col 2:21… “don’t handle, taste, touch… human teachings… seem wise… require devotion, pious self-denial, discipline… provide no help in conquering sin…”

Thinking about sin, or even how to correct it, leads to evil conscience and more sin. When you know you’re righteous, you can approach God with a true heart.
Heb 4:16… “come boldly to throne of grace… receive help in our time of need…”
Heb 9… “gifts and sacrifices not able to cleanse conscience… how much more will blood of Christ

our consciences from sinful deeds so we can worship…”

We must know and understand the power of a covenant. Grace reveals our inheritance: God’s last will and testament. Start walking in New Covenant blessings and power.
Acts 13:34… “I will grant you the faithful covenant blessings made to David…”
Rom 11:27… “this will be My

with them… when I take away their sins…”
1Cor 11:25… “this cup is the new covenant… established by My blood…”
Gal 3:17… “law doesn’t revoke covenant previously ratified… or cancel promise…”
Heb 7:22… “Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant…”
diatheke… dispensation; arrangement of one’s possessions after death; testament or will…
