Discussion Questions – Creed: Week 5

Getting to Know Me Questions:
* What is your favorite winter activity and/or memory with it?

* When you were a child, what was something you did that got you in a lot of trouble, or you
prepared yourself to get in a lot of trouble?

Into the Bible Questions:
* What’s something from this week’s teaching that you learned, that stood out, interesting
etc?

* Recite together, or read through the Apostles Creed (at the bottom of the study guide).

* Today’s focus I believe in the Forgiveness of Sins”.
* When you read/hear/think about this statement what is your response? Positive, negative,
doubtful, bored…???

* Pastor Kirby said we are uncomfortable with the word “sin” and prefer to use the word
“mistake”. What is your response to that? Do you struggle with the word and idea of sin?
Why?

READ: Romans 7:15-18 (slowly or a couple of times if needed; it can make heads spin)
* Pastor Kirby gave us two general types of sin…
1. Sins of Commission: When we DO something that we know we should NOT do.
(Violates God’s Law)
2. Sins of Omission: When we DON’T DO something that know we SHOULD DO.
(Demonstrating God’s hope)
* Are these 2 categories sufficient? Is there one more difficult than the other? What’s your
response to these?

* What do you think/believe the relationship between forgiveness of sin and baptism is? Is
there any relation?

READ: Colossians 2:13-14
* Jesus takes away/removes our sin debt from us. However, we have a difficult time either
accepting or living like it actually is. Why do you think we struggle with that?

READ: Ephesians 4:32
* A core element of Christianity is forgiveness, not just our but for everyone. It’s for
everyone (even Yankees fans), and we are to forgive as we have been forgiven.
* Why is this hard to accept and offer? What do you need or would help you with this?

Application:
* Read “John Wesley’s Covenant Prayer” together. What words or phrases stick out to you?

* So…Did you find the study “Apostles Creed” study called “Real Hope” on The YouVersion
Bible App? Did you start it? If so, how’s it going? If not, well…

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

John Wesley’s Covenant Prayer

I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you,
Praised for you or criticized for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and fully surrender all things
To your glory and service.
And now, O wonderful and holy God,
Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer,
You are mine, and I am yours.
So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
Let it also be made in heaven.
Amen.
