Do Not Quench - Walk in the Spirit

Message Notes

True spirituality is being filled by the Spirit of God

1st Condition to be filled by the Holy Spirit:
Do not grieve the Spirit

2nd condition of being filled by the Spirit:
Do not quench the Spirit

“Do not quench the Spirit.”
1 Thessalonians 5:19

It is the act of resisting the Spirit.

We quench the Spirit in both big and small ways

  • Small ways = the little ongoing, daily promptings from God
  • Big ways = seeking our own will instead of God’s Will

Car Analogy

We cannot be rightly adjusted to God and until we yield to His will

The solution is to yield to the Spirit.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:1-2

3rd condition of being filled by the Spirit:
Walk in the Spirit

If you have

  • Confessed your sin so you do not grieve the Spirit
  • Yielded your will to not quench the Spirit

Lastly,

  • You need to walk continually in the Spirit by relying on Him

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Galatians 5:16

Literally “be walking by means of the Spirit”

The 3rd condition is an unbroken reliance on the Spirit.
It is an abiding reliance upon the Spirit.

Abiding Reliance
Jesus taught and demonstrated an abiding reliance

“Abide in me, as I also abide/remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must abide in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you abide in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:4-5

When we live out an abiding reliance, our:

1. Prayer is effective.

  • “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” – John 15:7

2. Joy is From God.

  • “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” – John 15:11

3. Fruit is Perpetual.

  • “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last” – John 15:16

The abiding reliance on the Spirit is living out the posture of yieldingness to God

This week pray this simple prayer:

  • Spirit, show me the areas of my life I am not yielding to You.
  • Spirit, I trust You and need You to do this work in me.
