SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE

CONVERSATION STARTER
Is God unfair? Why do you think this is such an uncomfortable question? Have you ever wrestled with this question in your own life?

DEEPER

Read: Romans 9:10-18
In verses 10-13, Paul explains that God’s choice of Jacob over Esau was made “before they were born and had done nothing either good or bad.” How does this teaching on God’s election sit with you? What questions or concerns does it raise about God’s justice and fairness?

Paul emphasizes that God’s choice “depends not on human will or exertion.” How does this teaching confront our tendency to base our worth on our actions or achievements?

God’s mercy is not something we earn; it’s given freely. How might this truth influence the way you live your life this week? Are there areas where you’ve been trying to “earn” God’s favor that you need to surrender?

Paul cites the example of Pharaoh, whose heart God hardened for the purpose of displaying his power. How does this example help explain God’s sovereignty and justice, even in the case of those who oppose him?

Have you ever experienced a situation where God’s power was displayed in an unexpected way, even through someone or something that seemed opposed to God’s will? How can this perspective encourage you when facing opposition in your own life?

After studying this passage, how do you feel about the original question, “Is God unfair?” How has your understanding of God’s sovereignty, mercy, and justice deepened or changed?

What stood out to you in this week’s sermon? What were your biggest takeaways?
