the gospel without fear. 15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the
of the gospel. 17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is
. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. 20I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be
is Christ and to die is gain. 22If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
Q1 Paul is enthusiastic about living in Christ. He teaches the Philippians to do the same. Wich specific things he encourages them to do? List them (verses 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22).
Q2 When Paul is in chains for the gospel (14, 17) and is torn apart (23), he is content, even if some people have false motives in sharing the good news (15). Why is that?
Q3 In verse 19 we read about God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit is the same as the Spirit of Jesus or the Spirit of Truth. Do you know why Jesus promised to send another counselor or another helper (John 14:16)? And when was that “counselor” poured out in all believers, back then? Did you receive the Spirit and when did that happen?
Q4 Paul writes about his deliverence in verse 19. What kind of deliverence does he mean? Getting out of prison, his salvation, or something else?
Q5 Now, focus on how the indwelling of the Holy Spirit helps us in:
- Becoming more like Jesus (Galatians 5:22-23)
- Our prayers (Romans 8:26-27)
- Being bold in evangelism (Acts 4:31)
- Filling us in wisdom and understanding (Colossians 1:9-10)
Write down your experience. If you never experienced the Spirit as helper, pray to God to fill you with the Spirit.
