My Favorite Sins: The Big THREE
April 25, 2025
What are the big THREE Sins?
Greed — A strong desire for possessions, especially for possessions belonging to another.
Greed wants to:
Matthew 6:24:
“You cannot serve both God and money.”
Greed wants to:
Hebrews 13:5a:
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have…
Luke 12:15:
Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.
Greed wants to:
Matthew 6:2-4:
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
GIVING is the anecdote for Greed.
Matthew 6:21:
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Pride — Pride is an inflated view of self that resists dependence on God and elevates self above others.
When pride owns us, we no longer submit to God—we compete with Him.
Luke 18:11:
God, I thank You that I am not like other people…
Pride is:
Matthew 6:5-7:
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Prayer is the antidote for Pride.
James 4:6,10:
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble… Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Lust — is an intense, self-centered craving—usually sexual in nature— a desire to have sexual pleasure with someone other than your spouse.
Lust is:
Matthew 5:28:
Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
1 Corinthians 6:18:
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.
Matthew 6:16-18:
When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Fasting is the antidote for Lust.
Galatians 5:16:
Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
1 Corinthians 9:27a:
I discipline my body and keep it under control…”
THE BIG 3!
