MAPS that show the Bible’s reliability

M

“The remaining interval between the date of writing and the earliest manuscript evidence is so small as to be negligible. The last foundation for any doubt that the Scriptures have come down to us substantially as they were written has now been removed.” –Sir Frederick Kenyon, former director, British Museum

“The scrolls have shown that our traditional Bible has been amazingly well preserved for over 2,000 years.” —Eugene Ulrich, Notre Dame, chief editor of the Dead Sea texts for Oxford University

“It can be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference.” —Nelson Glueck, archaeologist

P

Over 300 references to the Messiah in OT fulfilled in Jesus. “We find that the chance that any man might have fulfilled just 48 (of those) prophecies is 1 in 10 to the 157th power.” —Peter Stoner, mathematician

“Most people are oblivious to the way the West’s Christian heritage has shaped education, healthcare, music, art, literature, the scientific revolution, to name but a few. Concepts like human rights, they don’t go back to Greek philosophers, they don’t go back to Roman imperialism… They go back to the Bible … the most influential, the most impactful, the most revolutionary writings that have emerged from the ancient world.” —Tom Holland, Oxford-trained historian and author

QUESTIONS
For reflection and discussion

  1. According to the following verses, what is Scripture good for? Hebrews 4:12; Acts 18:28; Romans 15:4; 2 Timothy 3:15. If Scripture is so valuable, why then do you suppose more Christians don’t know it well?

  2. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:3 and 5:18, and 1 Peter 2:15. What is the revealed will of God for your life in these passages? Why do we sometimes we live as if we don’t believe God has revealed His will for us in Scripture?

  3. Read Psalms 85:8; 119:114, 148. How is God’s word a refuge and shield when you meditate on its promises in times of trouble? Have you ever had an experience when God’s promises in Scripture helped you through a tough time? What happened? What specific promise helped?

PRAYER FOR PEACE

We are all heartbroken and shocked by the loss of life in Israel and Gaza. It is hard to even know how to pray. These Scriptures can help guide your thoughts.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels. Psalm 122:6-7
We join millions all over the world praying for peace. We ask for a miracle: let your peace fill Jerusalem, all Israel, all Palestine, and all the world.

I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. Psalm 140:12
We pray for justice in Israel for those who have lost family, for the hostages, and for their families. We pray for the poor and needy in Gaza. We pray that you open doors that allow food and medical supplies to reach those in need.

Pray for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 1 Timothy 2:1-2
We ask that you give wisdom to all leaders who have the ability to impact the course of this war.

Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war. Psalm 120:6-7
Lord, we need your supernatural strength to resist a rising tide of hatred, cynicism, and despair. Help us remember Jesus called us to be agents of peace.

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are fixed on you. Isaiah 26:3
In the midst of the chaos I settle my mind on you. Help me stay more focused on you than on evildoers or uncertainties. You are the unchanging rock in a chaotic world.

We lift these prayers to you,
Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.
