What does God’s word have to say about who followers of Jesus really are in Christ and how does that inform the way we approach politics?

1. Followers of Jesus are a people whose identity is determined by what He has accomplished above anything else, including our political affiliation.

1 Peter 2:9a
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…

John 13:35-36
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” 36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”

2. Followers of Jesus hold an ultimate purpose in proclaiming the message of Christ and political differences should never get in the way of keeping our common hope front and center.

1 Peter 2:9b
…that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

3. Followers of Jesus have hope for the future because Jesus has given us a place to belong and secured the blessing of God on our behalf according to his mercy.

1 Peter 2:10
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
