Sermon: Jonah the Mercy Keeper
Scripture: Jonah 1
Summary: Jesus is the better Jonah who goes to the gentiles willingly. Jonah represents Israel who never went or wanted to go to the gentiles. They wanted God’s mercy but didn’t want to dispense any of it to others. Are we going the same with the mercy we have been shown?
For Reflection and Discussion
Read Scripture: Jonah 1
Definition: Mercy is condescending love, reaching out to meet a need without considering the merit of the person who receives the aid.
- What was your understanding of the story of Jonah before the message? Have you ever studied the book before?
- Jonah didn’t want to go to the Assyrians and preach in case they repented. Put yourself in his shoes. Knowing how wicked the Assyrians were, would you go to Nineveh? Have you ever been in a situation where you avoided sharing the gospel with people?
- Jonah is the most reluctant prophet in scripture. Jesus on the other hand, always extends mercy to anyone who asks for it. How has Jesus shown you mercy over your life?
- Is God still showing us mercy? What does it look like?
- What area of your life or situation can you ask God to show you more mercy?
- Where can you show others mercy at the moment? Who is the hardest to show mercy to? Who has shown you mercy in recent memory?
