1But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. —2 Peter 2:1-3

2And many will follow their destructive ways… —2 Peter 2:2

Succumbing to deception happens when we put ourselves in position to be susceptible to the deceit.

Circumstances

Outward circumstances fit the context of Peter’s audience.
What are some outward circumstances that you have faced?

31Therefore do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” 32For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. —Matthew 6:31-33

Inward

Adam and Eve listened to the Serpent in Genesis 3. They listened not because of an outward circumstance. Something within them became discontent.

33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. —Matthew 6:33
