Day 248 - Train Your Body

Emily Green

“For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” - 1 Timothy 4:8 ESV

1 Timothy 4:8 tells us that godliness is of value in “every way.” Still, we see that it is of “some value” to pay attention to training our bodies. Some versions of this verse use the word “discipline” instead of the word “training.” Even so, the original Greek word here is gymnasia, which means “exercise,” specifically in a school or athletic complex. It’s where we get the words “gymnasium” and “gym.” I don’t know about you, but I just learned that God’s Word talks about going to the gym!

In addition to exercising and training our bodies, our physical health includes eating well, sleeping well, and anything else that can help our physical bodies thrive. Physical health is of value in the Kingdom of God, and it is of value in our lives!

Next Steps

  • Think about it: When was the last time I exercised?

  • Action Step: Get up and move today! Take a walk, go for a run, or go to the gym. Whatever you do, move your body!
