Ezekiel 8:1-18

8:1-10:22 | This vision of abominable activities taking place inside the Jerusalem temple actually occurred in September 592 BC, about 14 months into the prophet’s acted parable of the siege of Jerusalem (4:4-8). Apparently, Jerusalem’s elders erected an idol in the temple itself – quite possibly an Asherah, a carved pole representing the fertility goddess. Manasseh had previously committed the same sin (2 Kgs. 21:7).

8:12 | It is easy for unrepentant men and women to mistake God’s silence and discipline for apathy. While the Israelites saw that God had forsaken the land, they supposed that the hardships arose because He did not see their situation rather than because of their rebellion. Indeed, He saw every unrepentant act they committed.

8:17 | When allowed to flourish, paganism ultimately leads to violence and devaluing of human life.
