Forgiveness

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” 22 “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!”
Matthew 18:21,22

• People are

and will happen.

32 Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ 34 Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. 35 “That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”
Matthew 18:32-35

• Christ has

us, so we others.

9 …Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Matthew 6:9-13

Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
Colossians 3:13

What is forgiveness?

1) Forgiveness is a process in which by an act of our will, we

our rights to get even with someone who has wronged us.

17 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see that you are honorable. 18 Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone 19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God.
Romans 12:17-19a

2) Forgiveness is processing the anger, hurt, and negative emotions which come upon us because we have been violated and then

those emotions.

Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
Hebrews 12:15

Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
Ephesians 5:11

3) Forgiveness is completely

on Christ to heal us by changing those emotions toward the person who hurt us.

“Forgiveness is not natural, it’s supernatural.”

• Forgiveness brings

to the soul and for a better future.

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that prisoner was you.” —Author, Lewis Smedes

31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:31,32

  • Admit the hurt.

  • Offer forgiveness.

  • Begin healing.

  • Reconcile and rebuild if possible.
