Summer in the Psalms: Part 8 - Psalm 91

August 18, 2024

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” —Psalm 91:1

To dwell: to be fully

in a place or with a person

Being fully present means going all in!

  • All in means to be fully committed and
  • It means surrendering yourself and what you think to how God sees and thinks.

His ways are than ours

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. —Isaiah 55:9

This Sunday marks the start of Book 4 in the Psalms. It’s the shortest book of Psalms, going from Psalm 90-106.

  • People think Psalm 90 is the one, written by Moses. Book 4 is a mix of praise Psalms and historical Psalms.

Psalm 91 vs. Genesis 20

In Genesis 20, Abraham moves from where he had been living into the kingdom of Gerar. He tells the king of Gerar that his wife Sarah is his sister.

  • This was the 2nd time Abraham lied like this. The first was in Egypt.

I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” —Psalm 91:2

Instead of trusting in God, Abraham put his trust in

He returned to old

, his old patterns

Abraham’s thoughts vs. God’s thoughts

When confronted with the truth, Abraham answers:

Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.” —Genesis 20:11

3 For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and a bulwark. 5 You will not be afraid of the terror by night, or of the arrow that flies by day; 6 of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or of the destruction that lays waste at noon. —Psalms 91:3-6

Fear makes us

.

We forget where our protection comes from

We forget God’s promises over us

Abraham allowed his fear of the land he lived in to change the

place of his heart.

He let fear of man

his fear of God.

9 If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, 10 no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. 11 For He will order His angels to protect you wherever you go. 12 They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. 13 You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! —Psalms 91:9-13 NLT

Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. —1 Peter 5:8

God gives us the power to the enemy under our feet!

When confronted by the king, Abraham uses a half truth:

Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother… —Genesis 20:12

How many times do we respond to conviction with a half-truth or an

?

When Sarah is returned, Abraham prays to God for the kingdom to be healed.

Abraham was waiting to receive a promise from the Lord, the promise of a child.
In that waiting, he was used to release that same blessing over the king’s household.

Don’t

yourself because you’re still waiting on a promise.

  • Remember what God has done
  • Remember what God has said

Psalm 91:14-16 - His promises to us

God says: Because you love Me…

I WILL deliver you
I WILL set you securely on high
I WILL answer you
I WILL be with you in trouble
I WILL rescue and honor you
I WILL satisfy you

If God says it, He will do it!

It’s time to go all in!
