Better than Happiness Group Guide
January 27, 2024

Ice Breaker:
Which emoji best depicts how you’ve been this past week?

Prayer:
Ask the Lord to prepare the “soil” of your hearts to receive His word.
Ask the Holy Spirit to lead your group’s discussion.
Ask for the courage to be vulnerable and honest both internally and out loud. And to give you eyes to see yourself clearly.

Discussion Questions:
1. Pastor Scotty started out by asking everyone “Are you happy?” What messages about happiness are common in our current media and culture? What do you think about them?
2. Paul in Galatians says that we are freed from idols. Idols are anything that replaces God in our lives. What are common idols that we face today?
a. Do you have anything to share about finding freedom from an idol in your past?
b. As a group, take a minute or two of quiet to feel around in your heart. No need to share, but ask yourself: what are the idols that you are tempted to lean on in your own life? If you’re not sure where to start, sometimes asking yourself, “What do I feel like I can’t live without?” can be revealing. Ask God to give you freedom in any area you need to.
3. We are set free from idols so that we can freely live in the way God intended. Scotty used the example of music lessons and asked us to think about what kind of “music” our life is making.
a. Is there anything about the metaphor of music lessons and the “music of your life” that stands out to you?
b. How can having parameters actually increase freedom? (Think about someone who knows how to play the piano vs. someone who does not).
c. What notes stick out like a sore thumb in the music of your life? You can share or not.

Prayer:
Pray for each other and any needs that are shared. Ask for the Holy Spirit to continue to point out idols this week in your life that need to go. Ask Him to continue to develop the fruit of the Spirit in you. And for each of us to live freely in Christ.

Bible Project:
You can get an overview of Galatians through the Bible Project found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmx4UjRFp0M

For Next Week:
Try to read Galatians before we meet for next week’s sermon. It would be a great goal to read it once a week over the course of this series.
