Teacher Don’t You Care?

Main Point: Jesus’ authority over the wind and the waves demonstrates His identity as God and as the One we can trust.

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” —Mark 4:35:41

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” —Mark 4:3

  • When Jesus sleeps, He is showing His humanity.

  • Fear takes over when we forget who’s in charge.

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. —Mark 4:39

  • When Jesus speaks, He is showing His divinity.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” —Mark 4:40

  • When Jesus leads us through a storm, it strengthens our faith.

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”” —Mark 4:41

  • Who is Jesus to you?

Takeaway: When you are in a storm, there is no reason to fear—Jesus is in the boat with you.

Discussion Questions:

2) Why do you think the disciples were so afraid, even though Jesus was with them?
3) What are some “storms” (challenges, fears, struggles) that you have faced recently?
4)When you’re going through a hard time, what does it look like to trust that Jesus is with you?
Table Discussion Question: The disciples ask, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”—how would you answer that question in your own words?
