MATTHEW 6:9–13 (ESV)

9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen]

PERSONAL PRAYER

Personal Prayer is when we ask our Heavenly Father for our

and the things , or on our hearts.

MATTHEW 6:11 - Give us this day our daily bread

1:PRAYER FOR DAILY BREAD

ἐπιούσιος: epiousios = “daily”
- Daily
- For the

day
- In either sense… the idea of our next, ‘immediately following’ sustenance

BIBLICAL WORLD:
- Most people lived day to day (not week to week or month to month)
- Paid daily - if they missed work for a few days due to an illness or ailment, it could be disastrous
- Bread was the primary means of sustenance and was a daily thing and didn’t keep long

DAILY BREAD IMPLICATIONS:
- This is encouragement and direction to pray for our

.
- ἄρτος | artos = bread

2 Thessalonians 3:12 - Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.

  • Earn their own living = eat their own bread (ἄρτος)
  • Translated various ways, but the same idea is connected - work for one’s provision or food.
  • So in praying for daily bread - we are praying for God to provide for our .

  • Needs, not greeds

Proverbs 30:8 “8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me,”

** God is with you today. God wants you to trust Him today. He’s encouraging you to ask of him each day for the day’s needs. Repeat tomorrow.
Many times, we’re just choosing to worry and fear instead of trust God.

Matthew 6:25-34 - 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

ANOTHER NOTE:
Asking for daily bread requires

!

PERSONAL PRAYER IS MORE THAN JUST PRAYING FOR DAILY BREAD.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD WE PRAY FOR? HOW SHOULD WE PRAY?

2: PRAY ABOUT

Philippians 4:6 - do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Psalm 37:4 - Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

James 4:2-3 - 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

3: PRAY IN

James 5:13-18 - 13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit

Matthew 17:19-20 - 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

4: PRAY

1 Thessalonians 5:17 - pray without ceasing

Matthew 7:7-11 - 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
