The Lord
The Name of Jesus
December 22, 2024
When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. —Matthew 2:10-11
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD to the glory of God the Father. —Philippians 2:9-11
Kyrios = Lord, Master, Superior to all
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. —Romans 10:9
1.) WHY SHOULD WE SUBMIT TO HIM AS LORD?
HE’S IN CHARGE
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. —Colossians 1:15-17
HE’S THE MASTER WHO GIVES YOU WHAT YOU NEED
You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. —Colossians 2:13-14
2.) WHY DO WE RESIST HIM AS LORD?
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” —Luke 6:46
WE THINK WE’LL LOSE OUR FREEDOM
“A free man? - There is no such thing! All men are slaves; If you live for wealth, you’re a slave to wealth. If you live for morality, you’re a slave to the law. If you live to please people, you are a slave to the people you are seeking to please.” —Euripedes
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. —Galatians 5:1
Negative Freedom - Freedom from; it’s the removal of any and all constraints on our choices.
Positive Freedom - Freedom for; not just the permission to choose but the power to choose what is good. —John Mark Comer
3.) WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE TO SUBMIT TO HIM AS LORD?
The twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
“You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” —Revelation 4:10-11“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” —Mark 8:34b
1. Are there any areas of your life where you haven’t made him Lord?
2. Is there something he’s asked you to do that you’re avoiding?
3. Are you planning to submit to him as Lord in 2025?
4. Have you made him the Lord of your life?
