The Growing Walk of a Genuine Believer#
Pastor Steve Mills
Colossians 2:6-7

Main Point: In Colossians 2:6-7, Paul describes three evidences that you are growing in Christ. Your life will display:

I. The Indication of a Genuine Faith - Verse 6a

II. The Imperative of Walking in Christ - Verse 6b

III. The Implementation of Sanctification - Verse 7
(A Genuine Christian will be…)

A. Firmly Rooted (Verse 7a)

B. Built Up in Christ (Verse 7b)

C. Established in Faith (Verse 7c)

D. Overflowing with Gratitude (Verse 7d)

Here are some books which may assist you in deeper study and application of the truths presented in today’s sermon. While the elders cannot endorse every concept presented in each book, we do believe these resources will be helpful in profitably thinking through today’s topic.

The Questions for Spiritual Growth

Our Cornerstone mission is To Know Christ and Make Him Known. Community Groups help us to live out our mission as we discuss the Scripture passage from the sermon, how to apply it, and pray for one another.

  1. In what way does the “Therefore” of verse 6 refer back to verses 1-5 of Colossians chapter 2? How are verses 6-7 a necessary exhortation, given Paul’s concerns about false teaching in Colossae?

  2. Why is walking an appropriate metaphor for a Christian’s lifestyle and progress in sanctification?

  3. What does Paul presuppose must happen before a person can truly “walk in Christ”?

  4. What does it mean to receive “Christ Jesus the Lord”? What awareness of Christ’s deity did you have when you were saved?

  5. What Bible verses indicate that God is working in you to conform you to the image of Christ? Are you completely passive in this process, or called to participate?

  6. What is one way that God has built you up and established you in godliness, where you were formerly established in sin?

  7. What Bible verse or passage has God used most recently to help you grow in Christian character?

  8. Would those closest to you describe you as “overflowing with gratitude,” even when experiencing trials?
