Rest/Refresh: Rest Through Remembering
May 21, 2025

I. The challenge of the can leave us weary.

Psalm 77:1-2– I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted.

Psalm 77:3-4– I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint. You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak.

Psalm 77:7-9– “Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again? Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time? Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”

II. God’s in the past provides a firm foundation for in the present.

Psalm 77:10-15– Then I thought, “To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples. With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.

Psalm 77:16-20– The waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths were convulsed. The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth. Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked. Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

III. Our serves as a concrete reminder of God’s consistency and faithfulness.

Romans 6:3-5– Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

Next Steps:

  1. Practice “zooming out” when facing a challenge this week. How can you view your current situation in light of God’s bigger story?
  2. Become more familiar with God’s consistent faithfulness throughout the biblical story by committing to a Bible reading plan. The FCC app features a Bible tool to get started.
  3. If you’ve been baptized, spend some time reflecting on that day and what it means for your faith. If you haven’t been baptized, consider exploring what that step might mean for you. Tap HERE to contact a pastor about your interest.
