The key verse for our 21 Days of Prayer:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NLT
“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”
Today we continue examining the Model Prayer Jesus:
Matthew 6: 9-13 NKJV
“9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
Today we are going to dig deeper into verse 10: “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Let’s start by discussing some terms: The Kingdom of God, The will of God, and everyone’s favorite…heaven.
Thy Kingdom of God
Simple definition of a “Kingdom”: The rule of the King’s dominion.
The Kingdom of God is both Eternal (Psa 145:12-13) and Established (Dan 2:44)
The Kingdom of God is both a Future Hope (Rev 22:20) and a Current Reality (Luke 17:20-21)
Luke 17:20 NKJV
“20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, [a]‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.””
IF I AM IN CHRIST, I CARRY THE KINGDOM!
The Will of God
The Greek word translated “will” in the New Testament is thélēma. It often refers to God’s “preferred-will” or His “best-offer” to people which can be accepted or rejected.
Jesus modeled a life lived in perfect conformity with God’s will, and demonstrated that conforming to God’s will means sometimes taking the road less traveled.
John 6:38 NKJV
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
Approaches to characterizing God’s Will:
Passive/ Errant Approach: God’s will is always accomplished
Good Approach: God’s will is His Word
Better Approach: God’s will is doing what Jesus Did
Model Prayer Approach: On earth as it is in heaven
Citizenship in Heaven
When we give our lives to Jesus, we are considered “in Christ.” That is a spiritual truth. Thus, physically speaking, we reside today at 9191 Stirling Road, or wherever we are watching from online, but spiritually speaking we are wherever Jesus is, and that is heaven.
God tells us in the Book of Ephesians that He actually made us sit in heaven.
Ephesians 2:5-6 NKJV
“5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
Praying the Will of God
Prayer to Enter the Kingdom:
It starts by being “poor in spirit.”
(Mat 5:3)
Prayer to Expand the Kingdom:
We are called to “co-labor” with God
(1 Cor 3:9)
Prayer to Reveal the Kingdom:
This may include violent pursuit
(Mat 11:12)
Prayer to Prepare the Kingdom:
Using the Kingdom inside of me to prepare for the return of the Lord
