Jesus moved to compassion 33-35

“Deeply Moved” to compassion vv. 33-35
John 11:33 “33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was deeply moved in his spirit and troubled.” John 11:34 “34 “Where have you put him?” he asked. “Lord,” they told him, “come and see.””
John 11:35 “35 Jesus wept.”
33 Y cuando Jesús la vio llorando, y a los judíos que vinieron con ella llorando también, se conmovió profundamente en el espíritu, y se entristeció. 34 «¿Dónde lo pusieron?», preguntó Jesús. «Señor, ven y ve», le dijeron
35 Jesús lloró.
• Jesus understands our humanity - He is able empathize
• without ever sinning - losing control (wailing)

• Greek word ἐμβριμάομαι embrimaomai that is translated “deeply moved” in the original language has a connotation of anger - frustration - it actually is used to describe a horse’s snort of anger
• so what is Jesus’ reaction to death?
Jesus does not like death. Death and suffering is something against God’s Character. He sees death - he is angry
• <<>> Jesus understands our humanity - He is able empathize - He does not like death

Jesus’ Love is Evident
John 11:36 “36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!””
John 11:37 “37 But some of them said, “Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes also have kept this man from dying?””
36 Por eso los judíos decían: «Miren, cómo lo amaba». 37 Pero algunos de ellos dijeron: «¿No podía Este, que abrió los ojos del ciego, haber evitado también que Lázaro muriera?».

• we don’t know if it is enemies or not
• Even His enemies noticed his love for Lazarus
• talk - genuine sadness in v 37

“Deeply Moved” to action vv. 38-39a
John 11:38 “38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.” John 11:39 “39 “Remove the stone,” Jesus said.
38 Entonces Jesús, de nuevo profundamente conmovido, fue al sepulcro. Era una cueva, y tenía una piedra puesta sobre ella. 39 «Quiten la piedra», dijo Jesús.
• We see that phrase “deeply moved” again.
• This time, the phrase seems to spur Jesus on to action.
• He is in front of the tomb ready to do something

God’s Glory on Display vv. 39b-42
John 11:39b Martha, the dead man’s sister, told him, “Lord, there is already a stench because he has been dead four days.”” “40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?””
39b Marta, hermana del que había muerto, le dijo: «Señor, ya huele mal, porque hace cuatro días que murió». 40 Jesús le dijo: «¿No te dije que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios?».
Death stinks
• Jesus said since the beginning of this chapter, this sickness has a purpose, and it is God’s glory
• John 11:4 “4 When Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”” we’ll get to the second part of that verse in a minute
• consider both Martha and Mary’s statement
• v. 21 and v. 32
• “Lord if you had been here…”
• Jesus was working all of these things together for a purpose and this is the key ….. God’s glory on display

So that they may believe
John 11:41 “41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you heard me.” John 11:42 “42 I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe you sent me.””
41 Entonces quitaron la piedra. Jesús alzó los ojos, y dijo: «Padre, te doy gracias porque me has oído. 42 Yo sabía que siempre me oyes; pero lo dije por causa de la multitud que me rodea, para que crean que Tú me has enviado».

• Jesus had gathered a crowd and “so that they may believe”
• believe what? that Jesus is sent by the Father
Through this miracle God is glorified in it -
• Jesus shows his glory and this glory shines when he calls Lazarus

Lazarus, come out!
John 11:43 “43 After he said this, he shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”” John 11:44 “44 The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unwrap him and let him go.””
43 Habiendo dicho esto, gritó con fuerte voz: «¡Lázaro, sal fuera!». 44 Y el que había muerto salió, los pies y las manos atados con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: «Desátenlo, y déjenlo ir».
Jesus said it loud – come out!
the only person who could accomplish this was Jesus - this confirms who Jesus is.
Jesus, the son of God is showing his glory because he wants you and me come out as Lazarus…
