The Authority and Power of Jesus
Matthew 14-34

Pastor Mike Popovich

Matthew is showing us is the power and authority of Jesus to speak the word of God and to heal people.

A SIMPLE TOUCH

When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
Matthew 8:14-15 NIV

Touching a sick person was forbidden
Jesus is demonstrating real authority over the human condition.

ALL ILLNESS IS A RESULT OF SAYING NO TO GOD

When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
Matthew 8:16-17 NIV

Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross covers our sin and all our diseases to give us new and eternal lives.

A disciple lives life on Jesus’ terms.

When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Matthew 8:18-20 NIV
A disciple puts Jesus first.

Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Matthew 8:21-22 NIV

Is Jesus first in your life or not?

ARE YOU WITH JESUS?

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Matthew 8:26-27 NIV

POWER OVER SATAN AND HIS MINIONS

When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Mark 5:15 NIV

Look at what happened when Jesus returned to that region.

When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
Mark 6:53-56 NIV

How has Jesus impacted your life?
How has that helped you to tell people about that story and Jesus?
