THE PRODIGAL GOD
To Be Called Your Son
Luke 15:11-24
Week 4 May 10, 2020
Pastor Mike Popovich
To be a prodigal means to spend extravagantly, lavish, luxuriously, wasteful expenditure. This is how God loves us.
I. The Character Of Sonship
A son was a person whose job it was to carry on the family name.
A son’s job was to carry on the family business.
To be the eldest son was to be the highest ranking member of the family, second only to the father.
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise…4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. 6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. Galatians 3:26-29; 4:4-7 NIV
II. THE PRACTICE OF SONSHIP
Sonship means 3 things:
A. Deep security.
B. Intimate Access
C. Future Hope
I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.
Romans 8:18-19 NIV
III. THE COMMUNITY THAT RESULTS FROM SONSHIP
Undifferentiated Unconditional Commitment
Transparency
If we are brothers and sisters, then we have a claim on each other’s resources.
You need to grant to the people around you in this church life shaping impact.
You mainly become like the people you hang out the most with.
IV. THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF SONSHIP
Your elder brother is Jesus.
Sacrificial love…one man giving his life for the rest, changed a jungle into a community, and that was just a human being.
Jesus Christ gave His life for you.
Jesus Christ stepped forward and was beaten into the ground to save us from our sins.
Let that turn us into a family.
