Psalms 94:1-95:11

94:1 | The psalmist is indignant at the arrogant and insulting indifference of the wicked. He calls for God to shine forth or “show Himself in brightness” (Deut. 32:35; Isa. 35:4; Rom. 12:19).

94:8-11 | The psalmist urges fools to understand and abandon their foolish rebellion against God. Unlike senseless idols, the Creator God can see and hear. Futile means “quickly passing” – God’s thoughts are high and eternal, very different from those of human beings (Isa. 55:8-9).

95:1-2 | Let us reveals a corporate emphasis in worshiping God. Praising the Lord by oneself is not sufficient; God’s people also need to praise Him in community (Eph. 5:19).

95:7-10 | A hardened heart is the intellectual rigidity, the willful obstinance, and the emotional unresponsiveness that blocks what the Lord wants to say to someone. The word rebellion is literally “Meribah” and would have reminded the Israelites of two important scenes; when Moses struck the rock instead of speaking (Ex. 7; Num. 20) and when the Israelites believed the report of the 10 spies and did not trust God (Num. 14). In each instance of sin, people were sentenced to die rather than enter the Promised Land. These verses are quoted in Hebrews 3:7-11.
