Matthew 26:46-67

Weakness or Strength of God’s Chosen King?

Betrayed & Arrested

Judas, one of the Twelve, betrayed Jesus for

pieces of silver.

He signalled who Jesus was with a

but even then, Jesus called him “friend.”

Tried & Condemned

Jesus was taken to

the high priest, along with the Sanhedrin—Israel’s religious leaders.

These men were supposed to represent God’s justice, but instead they became the chief agents of injustice. “They were looking for

… but they did not find any.” – Matthew 26:59.

Jesus remained silent, fulfilling Isaiah 53:7—“He was led like a lamb to the slaughter…” When asked if He was the Son of God, Jesus replied boldly: “You will see the

coming on the clouds of heaven…” – Matthew 26:64 This was no blasphemy—it was the truth about the identity of God’s chosen King - Jesus

Mocked as Messiah

Then they spat on Him, struck Him, and

Him. Imagine spitting in the face of a king—yet that’s what humanity did to Jesus.

Still, heaven stayed

. No angels came. No fire fell. Why? “The Lord is patient… not wanting anyone to perish.” – 2 Peter 3:9 God’s forbearance shows His longing for repentance, not instant judgment.

Willing Submission

Jesus predicted everything that would happen—He was not caught off guard. “Do you think I cannot call… more than

of ?” – Matthew 26:53. He chose submission over force, obedience over escape.

“But how then would the

be fulfilled?” – Matthew 26:54

He was the Lamb of God, pierced for our transgressions (Isaiah 53:5).

Strength in Silence

Jesus’ silence was not

—it was strength under .

The One who will

the world stood silently before human judges—for our sake.

Spurgeon: “That spectacle of Christ spat upon… represents what man does to his God.”

Reflection:

What does loyalty to Jesus look like in our daily choices

In what ways do people still reject Jesus—as if spitting in His face?

How does Jesus model faithfulness under opposition?
