DQ: The Poet's Journal - Pt. 11
October 20, 2024

INTRO: Have you thought about how long it took the various contributors to write their Psalms?

READ: Psalm 119:145-152

DISCUSS
1. As you get older, do you think you’re getting closer to God?
2. Do you envision crying out to God your entire life, asking for his saving again and again? Or does it feel like someday you will be holy enough to not consistently need God’s saving power?
3. Do you know people who have walked away from the faith instead of pursuing Jesus as they grow old?
4. If - as Pastor Robert suggested - God’s “love language” is our obedience, what can you do to learn and know Jesus’s commands for us?
5. Pastor and author Eugene Peterson described the Christian life as “A long obedience in the same direction.” How does this goal help you think through staying close to Jesus your entire life?
6. What could be your long-term project with God?
7. What is stopping you from obedience? What do you need to be rescued from? Shame? A cycle of sin? Addiction? A relationship?

PRAY:
Lord, may we - like the psalmist - strive to grow closer to you as we grow older. May we learn what you have asked us to do, commit to daily asking for your help and saving, and patiently, steadfastly pursue lives of long obedience in the same direction.
