WHO AM I? Significance of the Death, Burial & Resurrection
Mike Teel, Pastor
FOCAL PASSAGE:
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. —Matthew 16:21
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” —John 11:25-27
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE
1. PRICE OF SIN MUST BE PAID
—First the bad news. The scripture says we are all sinners, that is, we have either willfully or unintentionally done something that is wrong.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, —Romans 3:23
—Many believe we can offset our “badness” with “goodness.”
2. DEBT WAS PAID BY DEATH
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 6:23
—What we have earned because we have violated the laws of God is death – an eternity separated from God – hell.
—But Jesus came to pay the debt of sin we had, and He was the only one who could – because of His perfectness having never done anything wrong.
21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. —II Corinthians 5:21
—So, the death was important to help us understand Jesus was paying our debt of sin.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE
1. IT ENSURES THAT JESUS
—It further illustrates that Jesus did indeed die.
—First verified by the Roman soldiers and now by His followers.
—These men could testify that there was no life in the body they buried.
2. IT WAS
LAST STAND
—If Satan could keep Jesus in the grave all would be lost.
—From a human perspective Jesus was held for three days.
—He made fun of death because death had been defeated.
54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” —I Corinthians 15:54-55
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE
—If Jesus had not resurrected from the grave, He would have been like every other religious leader who died in this world. A pile of dust!
—The resurrection of Jesus signifies His triumph over death and the promise of eternal life for believers.
—Death could hold Him no more. Satan had been defeated, and we get to share in this victory. It is our victory to Eternal life.
—Jesus said to Martha about being the resurrection and the life.
