Taking Ground is Scary

What stops us from taking ground?

What stops us from being more like Christ?

What stops us from doing the things God has called us to?

Outward signs that you’re at a threshold of scary

Pride
Fear

Insecurity
Unforgiveness

Anger
Overreaction

Being judgmental
Finger pointing

Excuse making
Guild and shame

How do we cross over from the scary to God’s will?

- Get rid of

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. —Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
[…]
but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. —Romans 7:21, 23 (NIV)

-

What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. —Romans 7:24-25 (NIV)

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. —James 4:7-8 (NIV)

Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. —James 4:8-10 (NIV)

Three phases of brokenness:
- Grieving
- Mourning
- Wailing

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar. —Psalm 139:1-2 (NIV)

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. —Romans 12:2 (NIV)

having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. —2 Timothy 3:5 (NIV)

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. —1 John 4:18 (NIV)
