Intro/Recap

• What is burnout? Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.
• Remedies and Responses to the feeling of burnout

// Cultivate

so that you can be effective in ministry
// and cry out to God in honesty about your pain
// Praise God and cultivate in honesty about God’s character

• We identified that sometimes burnout can come because of a lack of rest, it can come as a result of inattention by those who take you for granted, we would be remiss and incomplete in our study if we didn’t seek out other sources of burnout. Sometimes burn out can be rooted in self-

.
• So today, we are going to have one last look at a potential cause of burnout, and God’s remedy for it.

1 Peter 5:6-8

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
• Therefore >> V. 5 reminds us, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”. So, therefore, in this instance, means that there is an attitude or posture that God

with His presence, provision, power. That attitude or posture is not self-defense or self-preservation (those are of the ). Rather, it is the opposite: humility.
• “Humble” literally means or lower
• The reason for Christian humility is rooted in the of Christ

// Philippians 2:8-11 | And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
// For Jesus, humbling Himself to come as a human was the testimony that God the Father was all-wise, His plan was perfect, and His provision all-sufficient.

Defining Humility

• Humility is not thinking

of yourself, it is thinking of yourself . It is placing something else at the focal point of your mind rather than your feelings, your sense of need, etc. As we humble ourselves, we are laying the provision of those needs in the hands of God, who has promised to Himself provide for us.
• Robert Morneau >> What is humility? It is that habitual quality whereby we live in the truth of things: the truth that we are creatures and not the Creator; the truth that our life is a composite of good and evil, light and darkness; the truth that in our littleness we have been given extravagant dignity…. Humility is saying a radical yes to the human condition.
• Frederica Matthewes-Green >> Ego builds a cardboard fortress that humility must, every day, tear down.
• Humbling yourself is concurrently a to God to accept His provision for your need.

So, how is humility or humbling yourself finding healing in the midst of burnout?

• You have an enemy who doesn’t want the will of God for your life. Could your feeling of burnout be a way that the enemy tries to press you away from your calling?
• Humility before God is also how you

the work of the enemy.

Thomas Merton >> Give me humility, in which alone is rest, and deliver me from pride, which is the heaviest of burdens.
