Sermon Series: “Leaving a Legacy”

Building a Faith That Lasts

“He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments…” Psalm 78:5-7

Legacy: handed down from the past.

David:
• Wrote half of the Psalms
• As king, united Israel
• “A man after [God’s own] heart” (Acts 13:22)
• Jesus would come from his lineage

4 Principles about Legacy we learn from the life of David
1. A Godly legacy begins with the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7)

2. A Godly legacy requires you to put your trust and faith in God. (1 Samuel 17:32-37)

3. Be willing to have hard conversations. (2 Samuel 13:20-22)

The reason hard things happen is because we live in a fallen world. (Colossians 3:5)

We are called to make disciples. (2 Timothy 2:2)

4. Pass on to the next generation what God has laid on your heart. (1 Chronicles 22:6-10)

We give our kids an unrealistic view of us and of what’s expected of them.
If you want to leave a Godly legacy, then pass on all that God has given you to the next generation.

“One generation fails to pass on the resources to the next generation so that they can run their leg of the race…many are stranded at the starting blocks without a baton.” Dr. Tim Elmore, President of Growing Leaders
