Malachi 2:1-17

2:2-3 | A curse in OT times was believed to possess an inherent power of doom and destruction, often extending even to future generations – especially when uttered by the Lord (Deut. 27:15-26; 28:16-19).

2:5 | Life and peace was the Lord’s covenant promise if His people would honor Him and their commitments. Both words envision the enjoyment of God’s blessing and protection.

2:10-16 | Because Israel’s priests had failed in their responsibilities toward God, the people in turn failed to revere and represent God and His Word to other nations. Dishonoring the holy institution of marriage was one proof of the condition of their hearts.

2:15-16 | Take heed means “guard against or protect by attending to.” The principle applies to all commitments, but particularly to the covenant of marriage. Marriage God’s way (Gen. 2:24) should be carefully promoted and protected.

2:17 | You have wearied the LORD emphasizes God’s deep displeasure with Israel’s attitude. Although God is patient, His holiness and His covenant with Israel demanded consequences.
