INTRODUCTION

In Jesus’ day there were all kinds of stories, theories, and questions going around asking, “Who exactly is this Jesus?” On Palm Sunday we see the masses calling Him King. And yet five days later, He would be arrested, tried, and crucified.

“They took palm branches and went out to meet him. They kept shouting: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord — the King of Israel.” —John 12:13

Throughout the ages, Jesus is known as a great teacher, a prophet, a miracle worker, even an outlaw. Could He truly be the Messiah, the one who was prophesized about hundreds of years before His birth? Today it is our turn to answer, “Who is this man?”

Text: John 12:12-19 (CSB, New Testament)

Today’s Takeaway: Jesus is Immanuel, Messiah, and our Eternal King!

PALM SUNDAY/COMMUNION - Who Is This Man?

I. JESUS AS A

Him.

“King Herod heard about it, because Jesus’s name had become well known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15But others said, “He’s Elijah.” Still others said, “He’s a prophet, like one of the prophets from long ago.” —Mark 6:14-15

B. People

Him. (John 6:14-15)

“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. 16This is what you requested from the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let us not continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God or see this great fire any longer, so that we will not die!’ 17Then the Lord said to me, ‘They have spoken well. 18I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.” —Deuteronomy 18:15-18

“When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in an uproar, saying, “Who is this?” 11The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.” —Matthew 21:10-11

of Him.

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.” 28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.” —Matthew 7:24-29

III. JESUS AS THE SUFFERING SERVANT AND SAVIOR

A. He took on our

.

“He was despised and rejected by men, man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him. 4Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.” —Isaiah 53:3-5

B. He conquered

.

“While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes. 5So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men. 6“He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, 7saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’?” 8And they remembered his words.” —Luke 24:4-7

C. He died as God’s

for humanity.

“But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. 51Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. 52The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many. 54When the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” —Matthew 27:50-54

“When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15“But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” —Matthew 16:13-16
