Scripture: God’s Plan
Most married and few divorced in early America. Both living together and having children outside of marriage was illegal in most areas. Not until 1839 could married women own property. In 1920 women finally got the right to vote. Both the Great Depression and World War II put great stress on marriages. After the war, most wanted to settle down, get married, and have kids. A booming economy enabled most moms to be at home.
The invention of birth control pills in 1960 began a period of rapid change for American families. In 1969, no-fault divorce was introduced followed by the legalization of abortion in 1973. Today, cohabitation is up, weddings are down, sex is viewed primarily as recreation, and the birth rate has dropped to record lows. All this has led to a new understanding of what constitutes a family. Only God’s Word offers reliable guidance in
an age of great upheaval.
Six Qualities Establishing God’s Word as Our Ultimate Authority:
It Is
“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.” —Psalm 19:7a
.
The Bible is complete, covering every aspect of life. Nature also reveals the glory of God (Psalm 19:1), but it is incomplete.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” —Psalm 19:7a
“Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” —Matthew 4:4
It Is
“The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.” —Psalm 19:7b
The Bible is fixed, firm, and stable, clearly revealing right and wrong.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” —James 1:5
While man’s opinion fluctuates according to his mood, God’s word remains the same from age to age. While God created us male and female (Genesis 1:27), gender stereotypes are in constant flux. Don’t take your cues from human sources, look to God’s Word for direction!
It Is
“The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.” —Psalm 19:8a
The Word offers a straight road thru life rather than a crooked one. God’s Word offers refreshing new life which leads to wisdom which leads to joy.
Marriage as defined by God is so wonderful, why should we desire to change it? When godly men took multiple wives, it brought them misery. Stay on the straight and narrow and it will lead to joy!
It Is
“The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.” —Psalm 19:8b.
God’s Word is like the sun, giving light to us so we can see the issues of life clearly. Sometimes nature can be misleading as it is with singleness. While undesirable in nature, it is honored in the Bible (I Corinthians 7).
It Is
“The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.” —Psalm 19:9a
While everything in the universe is subject to decay and disorder (the law of entropy), God’s Word is immortal, enduring forever. It is a reliable source of guidance on life and family. Go to gotquestions.org for wisdom that is anchored in biblical truth.
It Is
“The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous.” —Psalm 19:9b.
When we follow God’s Word, we can walk thru life with confidence.
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God.” —Colossians 3:17.
In 1646 English church leaders concluded, “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.” Will you glorify God in your life and family? Jonathan Edwards spent an hour daily talking to his eleven kids and praying the blessings of Scripture over them. 150 years and five generations later, that legacy was still being passed on! Will you build your home on the Word of God?
