Jesus + Nothing: week 1
May 19, 2024

The doctrine of the Person of Christ is stated in Colossians with greater precision and fullness than in any other epistle of Paul.-J.B. Lightfoot

Jesus IS EVERYTHING.

(Colossians 1:15-16) Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through Him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through Him and for Him.

(John 1:1) In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

(John 1:14) So the Word became human and made His home among us.

(John 1:3) God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him.

(Genesis 1:26) Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us.

Acts 17:28(NIV) ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’

We find our life IN HIM!

(Colossians 1:18-20) Christ is also the head of the church, which is His body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So He is first in everything. 19 For God in all His fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20 and through Him God reconciled everything to Himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.

(2 Corinthians 5:17) This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Jesus didn’t die to make you better - He died to make you brand new.

(Colossians 1:21-22) This includes you who were once far away from God. You were His enemies, separated from Him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now He has reconciled you to Himself through the death of Christ in His physical body. As a result, He has brought you into His own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a single fault.

We are blameless because HE was blameless

Romans 3:23-26(NIV) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith…so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
