Eph 4:17-5:20 | Take and Throw
Rev. Christopher White
October 29, 2023

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called —Eph. 4:1

Our

- is first not to a job or spouse or to a place
Before all that
Adopted as heirs
Called out of death by grace
Unified as one church by the Spirit

Who we were and who we are
Reminder - this is all after who we are!
We cannot add to our

Paul’s teaching is how our is applied to our life

Paul returns to our deadness
Our default setting, without Christ
Mind

Alienated from

Disconnected from the source
Darkened, given to sin
Sin, hardens and builds callouses
Reinforces its broken nature

But in Christ!
Our minds are being renewed
Put off your old

- (cast off, lay aside)

Now, he’s going to talk through vices and virtues
Retraining us what to cast off and what to put on
This is part of the renewing of our minds

Notice how he connects our minds and our actions
Let’s look at vs. 25:

Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

Put away - falsehood
Take on - truth telling

Connected - mind and action
Unified in Christ - all around but also, we become whole

But also - often Paul connects us to the greater good around us as well
For we are members of one another

Again, vs. 28

Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

Take off - thieving
Put on - honest work
So that - I can share with those who have need

Cycle isn’t self-help, not self-improvement, not - as the young people say, self-care

Walking in a manner worthy of my calling means
Transformed

Transformed
Transformed

List here goes on:
Take off: falsehood, anger, corrupting talk, bitterness, sexual immorality, covetousness, drunkeness

Put on
Truth, forgiveness, tender heartedness, thanksgiving

up and not down

Cleary, some are teaching that this is ok
Spiritual/Material dualism
Secret societies
Body doesn’t

- similar to what we hear today
Sex is just a itch that people need to scratch
What happens in my private life is my own business

Paul - no!
Transformed mind, life, community
Covetousness has no place in the Kingdom
Selfishness -

the good into myself
God - life forth out into world

In God’s design, sex is placed inside the marriage of a man and woman as a sign of their covenant partnership - literally two people become one flesh.

No sin stay private - leads to alienation, callous, hard hearts

Walk in the

!
Darkness is where shame lives
Both in that it is sinful and that it grows there
But in Christ there is light, resurrection
We are called out of our dark tombs and into Christ’s light

Jesus:

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” —John 3:19-21

in the light there is life! Freedom!

Not just for me, but for the community!

Let us hear God’s word today!
Remembering who we are, let us put off our old self

Read it again, let’s light the light in!
Allow God to say Awake O Sleeper
One thing

Transformed mind, transformed life, Transformed Community
Mind, Action, Others - in Christ, prayer

Let’s read…
